    Hit-and-Run Vehicle & Insurance Locator™

What you can — and can't — learn from a license plate, and the lawful steps to identify the vehicle's insurer.

There is no public database that identifies an insurer from a plate number. Owner and insurance records are protected by the federal Driver's Privacy Protection Act and are released only to authorized requesters (for example through a police report, a DMV records request with a permissible purpose, or an insurer/attorney inquiry). This page does not look up owners or insurers.

    What to do next

    1. Report the incident to police (and file an MV-104 with NY DMV if required) and record the report number.
    2. Obtain the police report — it may list the plate, vehicle and insurance code of the other vehicle.
    3. Identify nearby cameras and send preservation requests quickly; many systems overwrite footage within days.
    4. Notify your own auto insurer. If no vehicle/insurer is identified, ask about uninsured-motorist coverage or MVAIC (NY).
    5. Keep all medical records and bills; No-Fault applications have their own filing requirements.
    6. Refer the matter for legal review where appropriate.

Time limits may apply to police reports, No-Fault applications, MVAIC notices and lawsuits. Verify the deadlines that apply to you with your insurer or attorney.
